Our first hackathon: anymize at the AI.Women Hackathon in Hamburg

“I will take this into my work routine.” We heard this sentence more often at the AI.Women Hackathon than we expected. And it summarizes quite well why two days in Hamburg were worth it.

Two days at KLU

On September 12 and 13, the AI.Women Hackathon took place at KLU in Hamburg. For us, it was the first hackathon, and we were involved in three roles: as a partner tool that the teams could use for their projects, in mentoring, and in the jury. Ana and Carlotta were on site both days.

What we talked about

In mentoring, it was almost always about the same question: How do I use AI without giving away data? No matter what a team was building, at some point personal data came into play. And with that, the question of what happens to it when it ends up in a language model.

That’s exactly what anymize is for. Names, addresses, and numbers are replaced before the AI sees the text, and then reinserted in the response. Many of those we spoke to want to use anymize in their daily lives now.

Best Use of anymize

In our category, we awarded the prize for the Best Use of anymize to three projects: easyAmt, femaktiv, and now2next. Congratulations to all three teams.

What pleased us the most: Even teams outside our category had integrated anymize or seriously considered how to do so. Data protection was not a mandatory topic during these two days, but part of the idea.
